Track description and topics of interest
The ICALT Doctoral Consortium aims to support and inspire PhD students during their ongoing research efforts on topics related to Advanced Learning Technologies. The Doctoral Consortium will provide PhD students with the opportunity to present, discuss, and receive feedback on their research in the context of a well-known and established interdisciplinary and international conference (i.e., outside of their usual local research environment). Prominent professors and researchers in the field of Advanced Learning Technologies will reflect on the selected papers and get engaged in a scientific dialogue with the PhD students.
The Doctoral Consortium itself will consist of two sessions. The first session aims at giving students the chance to present their work to others and get familiar with the work of other PhD students in their area. Each PhD student will give a brief presentation (about 15 minutes) about his/her work, with focus on motivation and research problem. The second session aims at giving students feedback from an expert in their area and let them discuss their work with him/her as well as with few other PhD students doing research in similar research areas.
The selection of the candidates is based on the quality and maturity of the proposals, relevance to the field and ICALT audience as well as the potential level of contribution of the DC to the PhD candidate’s dissertation.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Digital Systems for Open Access to Education and Learning
- Adaptive and Personalized Technology-Enhanced Learning
- Wireless, Mobile, Pervasive and Ubiquitous Technologies for Learning
- Digital Game and Intelligent Toy Enhanced Learning
- Computer Supported Collaborative Learning
- Technology-Enhanced Assessment in Formal and Informal Education
- Big Data in Education and Learning Analytics
- Technology-Enhanced Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Education
- Technology-Enhanced Language Learning
- Motivational and Affective Aspects in Technology-Enhanced Learning
- Technology-Enabled Learning of Thinking Skills
- Recommender and Decision Support Systems for Learning
- Technology-Supported Education for People with Disabilities
- Smart Learning Environments

- Wearable Technologies in Education
- Social Media Influence in Academia
- Virtual Worlds in Education and Training
Submission and publication of papers
Authors are required to follow ICALT Important dates and adhere to the ICALT author guidelines when preparing their papers, and submit their papers through the usual ICALT submission system. Additionally, at the same time as the paper is submitted via the conference system, an email from the main supervisor must be sent to the Doctoral Consortium Program Chairs to confirm that he/she supports this submission.
For information regarding the Doctoral Consortium, please contact DC program chairs.
A 3-page submission to the Doctoral Consortium should:
- Provide the title of the PhD Research, the name of the PhD Student and the PhD Advisor(s) and the student’s affiliation (i.e., university or institution where the PhD is being done).
- Provide a motivation for the research, explaining what the problem in the respective field is, and why it is a problem that addresses a significant research challenge in the field.
- Clearly formulate the research question(s).
- Sketch the proposed research methodology being used to answer the research questions.
- Describe the proposed or expected solutions/contributions of the applicant to the research area, and describes how the research is innovative, novel or extends existing approaches to a problem.
- Explain how you evaluate and validate your solution. For example, are you using an existing dataset? Which? Are you carrying out surveys? Which methodology are you using?.
- Explain in your conclusion how far you have advanced, the challenges of your research/field, and your expected contributions.
- Does your research require ethics approval/clearance? Most research that involves human participants requires appropriate consent. Including a paragraph about the ethical requirements for your research is highly recommended.
- Appropriately acknowledge the possible contribution of non-student advisors or collaborators, if applicable.
Submissions will be accepted for presentation in the Doctoral Consortium on the basis of their originality, significance, correctness, and clarity.
Applicants to the Doctoral Consortium should have progressed to the point where a clear plan of investigation has been laid out.
Accepted papers will be published in the ICALT conference proceedings.
