- Submit a pre-conference self-reflection document on what they expect to gain from the conference, including networking within the cohort
- Submit a post conference report on their shared experience at the conference, including what they learned at the conference and from the members of the cohort, and plans for continued interactions with members of the cohort.
- For undergraduates, masters and early stage Ph.D. students, there is no strict requirement of activities at SC 25 other than the cohort activities.
- For 3rd year and above Ph.D. students, preferences will be given to those applicants who anticipate participating at some activity in SC25 or IPDPS26 (e.g. presenting in main conference, workshop, poster, BoF, doctoral showcase, etc.).
Benefits to students participating in the cohort
Being in the cohort will provide undergraduate and early career students access to networking with senior students beyond their research circles or universities and help them gain valuable career advice. This is particularly beneficial for students from smaller schools or underrepresented or minority communities who may not have easy access to such advice. The cohort also allows students to form relationships with community members, understand how to be part of the community, and take on appropriate roles.
Being in the cohort will train senior Ph.D. students, enabling them to engage in community outreach activities. While a Ph.D. trains students in research, knowing how to effectively engage in outreach is also critical for their career development specifically and for the good of the research community more generally. Further, it will expose the students to research and education communities beyond their own and provide opportunities for recruiting postdocs or graduate students when they start their research groups. Our goal is to develop meaningful interactions built through the cohort that will translate into longer-term collaborations that may not have been otherwise possible.
